“When I was little, getting into mischief was my only distraction.” Sempé was born on August 17, 1932 in Bordeaux. A rather bad student, he was expelled for indiscipline and began working in various professions: Jack of all trades at a wine broker, instructor at a summer camp, etc. At 18, he decided to go to Paris. He toured the editorial offices and, in 1951, sold his first drawing to the newspaper Sud-Ouest. His meeting with Goscinny coincided with the launch of a dazzling career as a press cartoonist. His first collection of drawings appeared in 1962: Nothing is simple. It will be followed by around thirty others, all masterpieces of humor which admirably reflect his tender and ironic vision of our faults and those of the world around us. Sempé is one of the rare cartoonists to have illustrated the covers of the very prestigious The New Yorker, and currently entertains millions of readers in Paris Match.
